I am in front of Kupple Building

Little cheesy and not describe the contain, but it's ok for me! This article is dedicated for my souvenir from Bosscha Observatory.

Yesterday, I visited Bosscha Observatory at Jalan Peneropongan Bintang, Lembang, West Java. Bosscha Observatory is area consist around 5 hectares that dedicated to observing astronomy activities like observing a star, the moon, and another sky objects. Bosscha Observatory is the oldest observatory in Indonesia.

The History of Bosscha Observatory comes from Netherland Colonialization in Indonesia. And need to be underlined here, the guide said that Bosscha is the named of the Area, but the building itself, that be the symbol of the Bosscha Observatory called Kupple that means dome. The construction of Kupple began at 1923 and finished at 1928. Based on what I heard from the guide, the part of construction made by Germany and come in Indonesia via Batavia Harbour by ship and then from Batavia to Bandung by Train. Finally from Bandung to Lembang by horse cart.

Why the area of Observatory called Bosscha?

The guide said it come from the name of the biggest funder of Bosscha Observatory, Karel Albert Rudolf Bosscha. Actually, He is a Netherland, owner of a tea plantation in Malabar area, Lembang Bandung in that time. And the query is Why the businessman like him want to build Observatory? Actually, Karel Albert Rudolf Bosscha is the son of the physicist Johannes Bosscha and he wanted to develop the science and technology in the Dutch East Indies.

After the independence of Indonesia from Netherland and Japan, Bosscha Observatory belongs to Indonesia University as the only one science and technology centre and representative of Indonesia Government. But after, the Bandung Institute of Technology declare to split up with Indonesia University, at 1959 Bosscha Observatory belongs to Bandung Institute of Technology. And now, Bandung Institute of Technology is the only one that has major of Astronomy in South East Asia.

Hmm.. what the next that will I tell to you? Well, the website of Bosscha Observatory is bosscha.itb.ac.id. You can find the work time and the fee to enter the Kupple building there. When I visited Bosscha Observatory, the fee enter is free but you should pay 15.000 IDR to enter Kupple building.

In Kupple building you will find the biggest telescope there called The Zeiss double refractor to observe double star. The Guide said that normally stars have their own pairs.*When I have my own pair? Rolling eye*.The guide also practices how to use The Zeis double refractor. Do you want to know? Visit there, please! wkwkwk

After we enter Kupple building, then we enter the multimedia room to heard explanation about astronomy phenomena. There, I just realized that the astronomy is so so so beautiful (out of thinking about the math of astronomy wkwkw). The guide told me that in Bosscha Observatory not only have The Zeiss double refractor telescope but many of the other refractors are not to show for the public, like The Schmidt telescope (nicknamed: Bima Sakti telescope), The Bamberg refractor, The Cassegrain GOTO, and The Unitron refractor.

Besides the main content of their explanation, they (The Guide) also said to us that now, unfortunately, the Bosscha Observatory is not good enough to observe because the light pollution around there is high. Lembang now is not a tea plantation, but recreation area that have any light attraction near Bosscha Observatory. That's why the Astronomy Association wants to build other Observatory in Indonesia located in Kupang that won't be open to the public. Very very unfortunately....
